Our Story
Morry Kaplan began working as an independent regional record distributor back in 1939,
carrying a variety of labels, including Savoy, Imperial, and Exclusive Records.
By the end of the decade, Kaplan was ready to make the jump from regional
record distributor to label impresario. He named his nascent label after the
Danceland dance hall, located at the intersection of Forest and Woodward on
Detroit's West side. Danceland's brief existence from 1948 to 1951 coincided with a turning point in
music history, and the label's 78 rpm singles provide a time capsule from the
burgeoning Detroit music scene of the late 1940's and early 1950's.
Lovelane Music Publishing was founded in 1960 in Detroit by Morry Kaplan's son, successful
record promoter Sammy Kaplan. A Motor City native, Kaplan aspired to capture the essence of Detroit R&B, blues and funk
from its primordial beginnings in the late-1940's with Candy Johnson, John Lee Hooker, Tony Blues Lewis, The Goldtones and Rose Nelson,
to the Present Day. Sammy's legacy commitment to this timeless American music has made Lovelane a unique source of quality musical compositions and
performance. Now based in Los Angeles, Lovelane owns or administers licensing for a multitude of prestigious
catalogs. Lovelane Music Publishing brings their clients over 40 years of experience in successful representation
in the licensing of music projects.
